Afghanistan diary

By Edward Stourton
November 15
Arrival in Islamabad

"I had a momentary qualm when I was told that the plane was something called a Yak, but it delivered me in time to review the papers on Today".

November 16
A rash promise?

"Misery and frustration abound, and there's not even any booze to wash them away".

November 17
Up the Khyber Pass

"The Khaled Modern Guest House was so modern it hadn't been finished; the fourth floor was no more than a few wooden struts and plenty of ambition, but somehow the rooms beneath still managed to feel old and seedy".

November 18
En route to Kabul

"There is said to be a cook, but he is apparently engaged in shaving off his beard this evening so I am reduced to cooking pasta with kidney beans and tinned tuna for dinner".

November 19
Live from Kabul

"It's childish, I admit it, but somehow simply being able to say "Good morning, this is Today with James Naughtie in London and Edward Stourton in Kabul…" made it all seem worthwhile.".

November 20
Travelling in a Volga

" ... four of us are crammed into a 1960s Russian Volga; classic car enthusiasts back home would fight to the death for it, but it's not quite the vehicle of choice".

November 21 to 23
Dash for a flight

" ... the diary cannot resist returning to record that it has just been mistaken for John Simpson by an air stewardess on the flight home. Is this good or bad? ".
