Navanethem (Navi) Pillay was recently appointed the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. A bus driver's daughter from a poor Indian section of Durban in South Africa, Navi grew up and began her human rights work during the apartheid era and became the first woman of colour in Natal province to start her own law firm and to be appointed as a High Court Judge in South Africa. She won victories for prisoners of apartheid and becoming an advocate for women. She joins听Jane to talk about the challenges of her new job and about the generosity of the people from her home town who collected money to pay for her high school and university education.
