WeÌýnavigate the maze of treatments available for breast cancerÌý.
A ‘one size fits all’ approach used to be the standard treatment for breast cancer. Until relatively recently, women would have extensive surgery to remove the tumour followed by a standard cocktail of chemotherapy drugs and radiotherapy to destroy any lingering cancer cells. But within the last few years, research has revealed that there are many different types of breast cancer and a vast number of treatments are now available that target breast cancer cells in a more precise, biological way.
As part of Woman’s Hours’ Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jenni Murry is joined by Dr Andrew Wardley, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, and byÌýDr Julie Iddon, Consultant Breast Surgeon at East Lancashire Hospitals, to discuss the many breast cancer treatments available today.
