Winning Women's Votes: Today’s Unemployed Youth 10 Feb 2010
Is talk of a ‘lost generation’ alarmist or a reality?

Recent unemployment figures published showed a bigger fall than expected and was cheered by City economists, charities and union leaders. But of more concern is that the Labour Force Survey statistics also indicated the highest levels of unemployment are among 16-24 year olds, with one in five people under the age of 25 still struggling to find a job. And there have been warnings that further job losses are inevitable in the coming months, which could be particularly hard on young people. As part of our Wining Women’s Votes initiative Woman’s Hour asks: With nearly a million young people still out of work is talk of a ‘lost generation’ alarmist or a reality? And how best can the state support and help them? Jenni discusses the issues with Kate Stanley, Head of Research for IPPR, Sue Round, Head of Learning and Development for Sainsbury’s and Nicci Clark, a team leader for the Princes Trust, on a programme for unemployed youth aged 16-25, based at Acton College.
