Rolling back the rights of women
Three hundred Afghan women risked their own safety by taking to the streets to protest against a new law that says that women cannot leave home without their husband鈥檚 permission and gives husbands the right to demand sex with their wives. Critics say the new shia family law passed last month, essentially legalises rape within marriage. Governments and rights groups around the world have condemned the legislation but critics have accused the women of being anti shia and anti Islam. Jane is joined by Ceri Hayes from Womankind Worldwide and one of the female protestors in Afghanistan. |
