Hidden language of soap powder boxes |

A new exhibition at London's Design Museum shows that there might be more to soap powder packaging than first meets the eye.
Soap powder boxes are displayed in an area no bigger than a launderette and prominent journalists and writers - such as The Independent's Deborah Orr and author Will Self - have been invited to write short essays for the show's catalogue.
Many decode the messages on soap boxes as racist and sexist and brand names range from the familiar to the downright strange - Dash, Duz, Fab and Vel to name a few.
Lorraine Gammon, Senior Research Fellow in Graphic and Industrial Design at Central St Martins College of Art & Design, and Curator of the exhibition explains why soap powder is not a frothy subject. Dirty Washing: The Hidden Language of Soap Powder Packaging is at the Design Museum until 3rd November 2001. Info line: 020 7940 8790.
