Has the prevalence of post natal depression been exaggerated?
Last week a report commissioned by the government revealed that suicide is now the leading cause of death amongst new mothers, which might lead you to believe that they are particularly vulnerable to clinical depression.
But according to Professor Jake Najman of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Queensland, women with babies aged 6 months are happier on average than the rest of us.
Is he right? And has the prevalence of post natal depression been exaggerated by the media?
Professor Najman discusses the issues with Dr Ellen Goudsmit, a Chartered Health Psychologist, and Scientific Secretary of The Association for Post-Natal Illness.
