According to official Turkish government figures, between 1995 and 1996 there were almost 3,000 allegations of ill treatment of prisoners by Turkish police and security forces.
For women this has often meant sexual abuse and rape. In Istanbul alone, 132 women who claimed to have been raped while in custody have sought help from a specially set up legal aid project in the last three years.
Up until now, the question of rape by state forces has remained a taboo subject. But now a group of Turkish women have been discussing their experiences publicly and attempting to get the government to admit what is happening.
Recently 19 of them were charged with insulting the state and now face prison sentences. Dorian Jones went to meet some of them.
And Martha talks to Anne Sebba, journalist and member of PEN, who has been following the story of Asiye Zeybek, who has written about her experience of being raped in police custody, and who has spent the last five years in prison, while her trial is continually delayed.
