Women in Algeria Wednesday 19 December 2001
When Algeria won the War of Independence against France in 1962, the women who'd fought in it had every reason to believe that they would play an equal role in society.

However, The Family Code, introduced in 1984, turned women into minors. Not only is domestic violence rife, but they are also the victims of brutal rape and violence by the Islamic Fundamentalists, who've been fighting for power since Independence.
Jenni is joined by Cathie Lloyd, Senior Research Fellow at the Queen Elizabeth House, International Development Centre, Oxford University, and Louisa Ait Hamou, University Lecturer in African Literature and a women's rights activist, to discuss how disappointing President Bouteflika has been since coming to power in 1999, what hopes there are for women in the future, and what impact the events of September 11th have had on the country.
