Symphisis pubic dysfunction Wednesday 16 January 2002
With pregnancy you expect discomfort and maybe even pain, but few women would expect to be confined to a wheelchair or have to rely on crutches.

But there's a rare condition called Symphisis Pubic Dysfunction, or SPD, which can have this effect on pregnant women and can lead to new mothers being unable even to pick up their babies.
It's thought to affect around 1 in 500 pregnant women. The condition is so rare that doctors often aren't even aware of the condition.
Claudia Hammond speaks to Dr Rami Hussein from St Thomas' Hospital and sufferer Kristina Masih about the full implications of the illness.
Dr Rami Hussein is keen to hear from women who have undergone surgery as a result of SPD. Details of how to contact him are available from our Actionline on 0800 044 044.
