Jo Self has been appointed as the first artist-in-residence at The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew in South West London. There has been no artist at Kew since the 19th century painter, Marianne North, travelled to remote parts of the globe and donated her works to the gardens.
Jo Self insists she's very much a modern artist and not a botanical or horticultural painter. Nonetheless, the strange forms of many of the tropical plants and trees housed in her garden have had a deep effect on her. Simon Parkes spent the day with her.
