The number of women having their healthy breasts removed as a precaution against cancer is on the increase.
Evidence as to the effectiveness of this drastic surgery has been very sketchy until now. But a team at Christie's Hospital in Manchester is about to publish new research which suggests that pre-emptive mastectomy is the best solution for those with a family history of breast cancer and who test positive for the faulty gene.
