Breast Cancer and Mastectomies Friday 13 September 2002
The number of women having their healthy breasts removed as a precaution against cancer is on the increase.

Evidence as to the effectiveness of this drastic surgery has been very sketchy until now. But a team at Christie's Hospital in Manchester is about to publish new research which suggests that pre-emptive mastectomy is the best solution for those with a family history of breast cancer and who test positive for the faulty gene.
Dr Andrew Baildham from Christie's Hospital in Manchester who is behind this new research and Wendy Watson, who had to make this agonising decision herself, and is now concerned about what will happen to her daughters.
