India's Gender Imbalance Friday 28 February 2003
Image: Indian Girls
Are years of prejudice against girls coming back to haunt India? The cultural preference for sons has left the country with up to forty million fewer women than there should be.

Abortions of female foetuses, female infanticide and the general neglect of girls have left the ratio of women to men at critical levels in some regions. Tinku Ray speaks to young men in one badly affected district that are struggling to find a wife and being forced to look far afield.
Shailaja Fennell of the Development Studies Committee and Veena Nayyar of Women's Political Watch, join Martha to explore the long-term impact of this dearth of women on the country.
