Are Nurseries Suitable for Children Under 18 Months? Wednesday 18 June 2003

The Work & Pensions Committee is due to publish a report based on its recent inquiry into the provision of suitable and affordable childcare.

But among the evidence which it's been hearing, there's been more research which suggests that, although the government is committed to providing nursery places for children from 4 months upwards, placing children under two in nursery daycare may result in them developing anti-social and aggressive behaviour a few years later. On the other hand, there has also been a recent study which suggests that group daycare has no negative effects whatever the age of the child.
Professor Edward Melhuish from the Institute for Study of Children & Families, and Parenting writer Kate Figes join Jenni to discuss what the government's childcare aims are.
