Women Smugglers in Jamaica Jail |

Earlier this year the UK's deputy High Commissioner in Jamaica ignited a political row when he claimed that as many as one in ten passengers on flights into Britain were attempting to smuggle drugs. The government has now introduced visas for Jamaican nationals and are hoping that it could deter potential smugglers.
But there are fears it could lead to a massive rise in the recruitment of women in this country. A record number of British women have been arrested and convicted for attempting to bring drugs into the country this year. In 1996 25 women were arrested, now it's four times that number.
In this, the first part of our feature on Jamaica and female drug smugglers - Caroline Turriff went to Fort Augusta, Jamaica's only women's prison to talk to prisoners. Their names have been changed and the their language can be strong. Details of Charity: Hibiscus, 18 Borough High Street, London SE1 9QG. Tel: 020 7357 6543, e-mail: fpwphibiscus@aol.com
