Joan Jara Saturday 20 September 2003
A week ago people in Chile remembered the worst atrocities of the Pinochet regime when they held a ceremony at the national stadium where so many political prisoners were tortured and killed.

On September 12th, 30 years after the coup, it was renamed the Victor Jara stadium after a much loved folk singer who was himself executed. He is now an icon in the Spanish-speaking world.
He'd been a very public supporter of Salvador Allende's socialist government which was elected to power in 1970. That support led to his violent death when General Augusto Pinochet seized power, establishing a military dictatorship that was to last until 1990.
Victor Jara's English born widow, Joan, a dance teacher is in London this week and joins Martha to talk about her husband's life and the festival.
The Freedom Highway festival is at the Barbican until Monday 22nd
