Afghanistan Friday 31 May 2002
It's just 6 months since the Taliban fled Kabul, ending a 5 year regime which banned girls' education, made the wearing of the burqa compulsory and banned women from leaving the house without a male relative.

A lot has changed - girls are back at school, women have a guaranteed place in the new democracy and long term exiles are returning at last to their homeland. But there are still many hangovers from the Taliban era.
In this special Woman's Hour programme from Afghanistan, Martha talks to women held in Kabul jail for running away from arranged marriages and she finds out why, even in the relatively secure environment of Kabul, many women still feel too scared of violence to abandon the burqa.
