Broadcaster and novelist, Sandi Toksvig, discusses the merits of Andrea Levy's (pictured) 2004 winning novel
Synopsis: Queenie Bligh's neighbours in London don't approve when she agrees to take in Jamaican lodgers. But Queenie is desparate. Her husband Bernard left for the war and hasn't been heard of since. One of her lodgers is Gilbert Joseph, one of the several thousand Jamaican men who joined the RAF to fight against Hitler. But on his return to England as a civilian, he finds himself treated very differently. Gilbert's wife Hortense had longed to leave Jamaica and start a better life in England. But when she joins him she is shocked to find London not the quite the place she imagined.
