TX: 06.02.04 – ABUSE OF DISABLED PARKING BAYS – YOUR VIEWS

PRESENTERS: JOHN WAITE and WINIFRED ROBINSON

THE ATTACHED TRANSCRIPT WAS TYPED FROM A RECORDING AND NOT COPIED FROM AN ORIGINAL SCRIPT. BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF MISHEARING AND THE DIFFICULTY IN SOME CASES OF IDENTIFYING INDIVIDUAL SPEAKERS, THE ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ CANNOT VOUCH FOR ITS COMPLETE ACCURACY.

WAITE
On Wednesday we looked at the problems of people parking in disabled parking spaces when they don't have a disability.

ROBINSON
A number of you, including Hugh Wilman, e-mailed us to say that some years ago you could buy sticky labels to attach to offending vehicles, the labels read: "You have taken my parking space, would you like my disability too?"

WAITE
David Elliot-Smith, who's a little more direct: "Hit the miscreants where it hurts," he proclaims, "by fines and clamping and maybe even naming and shaming in the local press."

ROBINSON
Glennie Whitely says that while she fully supports disabled parking spaces at the supermarket, she doesn't feel the same way about mother and toddler spaces. "Generally mothers are young, fit, healthy human beings," she says, "and not in need of special treatment. Perhaps there should be spaces for those who've had a bad day at the office."
