What is a good satellite installation?

Satellite is a way of receiving digital television services using a dish, mounted with a clear line of sight to the sky. It picks up a signal from a satellite. The same signal is received by everyone in the UK who has a satellite dish.

It is quite difficult to align a dish correctly and a qualified installer is recommended.

Satellite System

A satellite signal is received via the dish and focused onto a device at the end of the metal rod which is known as a Low Noise Block (LNB). This signal then travels down from the LNB to your set-top box or television.

Worn or damaged

A satellite dish and听its LNB need to be in good condition and not rusty, bent or broken;听this includes the metal rod that holds the LNB. Also, water can leak into the LNB if the dish is very old and听affect听reception.

Obstruction

The dish needs to be free from obstruction and mounted high enough to have a clear line of sight to the sky.听

Direction

The dish needs to point to the satellite whose signal you want to receive. The dish can move in high winds, so it's worth checking it is pointing in a similar direction to your neighbour's.

Cable and connectors

A television signal will always lose some of its strength as it passes along the cable and through the connectors. Therefore it is important to minimise the loss by using good quality cable and connectors. Check that none of the cables or听connectors is听damaged.

Qualified Installer

We cannot recommend individual Installers. However, the is a recognised trade body which will be able to put you in touch with one of their members in your area.
