Vitality County Championship Division One, Spitfire Ground, Canterbury (day one)
Nottinghamshire 393-6: Slater 160; Gilchrist 2-85
Kent: Yet to bat
Kent (2 pts) trail Notts (3 pts) by 393 runs
Ben Slater struck a century as Nottinghamshire boosted their Division One survival hopes and sent bottom-placed Kent closer to the drop after dominating the opening day at Canterbury.
The opener made 160 off 217 balls to help the visitors, eighth in the County Championship table, rack up an imposing 393-6, which included 37 extras, after losing the toss.
Haseeb Hameed contributed 56 in an opening stand of 196 with Slater, who was dropped on 41, while Jack Haynes hit 62.
Former Nottinghamshire all-rounder Joey Evison broke the first-wicket partnership, bowling Hameed, before Freddie McCann was dismissed by Nathan Gilchrist for eight.
Joe Clarke had made only 18 when George Garrett accounted for him but Haynes and Slater piled on the runs, adding 66 for the fourth wicket before Jack Leaning dismissed Slater.
Haynes and Lyndon James put on 60, with the latter contributing 34, before falling in quick succession as Nottinghamshire edged towards 400.
