Jacob Brown came off the bench to score Stoke's winner

Jacob Brown scored a late winner as Stoke City beat Wolves in the Carabao Cup to set up a third-round tie with Gillingham next week.

The summer signing from Barnsley popped up to slam home a shot which John Ruddy should have saved after a pass from fellow substitute Steven Fletcher.

The game was far from a classic with each goalkeeper making a single save.

Premier League Wolves named a strong team with 拢35m summer signing Fabio Silva getting a debut.

The former Porto forward, 18, shot wide from the edge of the box in the first half, had a shot blocked after the break and fired over in injury time.

Championship Stoke had chances before their winner with Harry Souttar forcing a save with a header and Fletcher having a shot deflected over.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo brought on Raul Jimenez as he looked to avoid penalties - but they fell to Brown's late strike.

Stoke manager Michael O'Neill said: "It was a great result for us against a very good team. You can come into these games and not have anything to lose and the boys handled the game very well.

"We made seven changes and everyone who came in did very well. It creates competition which is what we want.

"When we looked at their team and they have a new 拢35m striker and Adama Traore playing up front I knew we were going to be challenged. They threw a lot at us but clean sheets give you a chance to win games."
