Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan captained Germany to victory over the Czech Republic in a friendly.

Leeds' Robin Koch and Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger also started as Benfica's Luca Waldschmidt hit the winning goal in the first half in Leipzig.

Waldschmidt pounced after keeper Jiri Pavlenka had done well to push away a fierce attempt by Florian Neuhaus.

Pavlenka produced several fine saves to twice stop Waldschmidt from scoring and keep out debutant Bote Baku.

Neuhaus also struck the woodwork before Burnley forward Matej Vydra, on as a substitute for the Czechs, was denied by Kevin Trapp.

Gundogan was replaced at the start of the second half.

Joachim Low's side host Ukraine in the Nations League on Saturday before travelling to face group leaders Spain in the same competition next Tuesday.

Czech Republic, who are in Scotland's group, have back-to-back home games against Israel on Sunday and Slovakia next Wednesday.
