Gavin Chesterfield has been named Cardiff City academy manager after 15 years as Barry Town United boss.

Chesterfield signed a new contract at Barry in May despite their relegation from the Cymru Premier last season.

But the 43-year-old is leaving Jenner Park to take over from David Hughes at Championship club Cardiff.

"It's a fantastic club with a huge history and a passionate fanbase and I want to thank the board for their trust," Chesterfield said.

"This feels like the perfect opportunity for me, as I know a lot of people at the club having worked with and supported the education of several coaches including those currently supporting the first team, academy, women's sides and foundation."

Barry announced Chesterfield's exit earlier this month, saying he would remain in charge until 5 November to help the club's transition to life under a new manager.

Chesterfield has previously worked for the Football Association of Wales in player development and coach education.

He moves to Cardiff after former Bluebird Hughes joined Manchester United in August.

"Dave Hughes is a close friend of mine and I feel he has left the academy in a strong place and made a significant contribution, and I'm sure the staff would agree," Chesterfield told the Cardiff website.

"With the new academy facility being developed at Llanrumney, it's an exciting time to be involved with the academy. It is important that we build upon what has been created in recent years."

Chesterfield led Barry to three promotions in four years to return to the top flight in 2017.

Barry finished third in 2019 and qualified for the Europa League qualifiers for two consecutive seasons.
