Darren Moore says Port Vale need to be more ruthless but is positive about the attacking options at his disposal.

After being relegated in April, Vale have scored in just two of their four League Two games, going four hours without a goal after their opening day success at Salford –their only victory so far.

Moore’s side left it late to pip Wolves Under-21s on penalties in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, though there were first Vale goals for new faces Lorent Tolaj and Ronan Curtis.

Moore told ������̳ Radio Stoke: “It gives us confidence. They will turn games for us – it’s what we brought them to the club for.”

Vale spurned a glut of chances at Vale Park and needed a last-gasp Curtis equaliser to send the Northern Group B tie to spot-kicks.

Moore said: “The bit I wasn’t happy with was that ruthless mentality in front of goal. We dominated the game and had chances to have a more secure result.”

Sheffield United striker Antwoine Hackford and Aston Villa midfielder Rico Richards came off the bench after arriving on season-long loans on deadline day.

Moore said: “We had a small window of opportunity to see them. You can see what they bring to the team.

“We are really pleased for those two to get an outing at Vale Park and be part of a positive result.

“We wanted to win the game, however it came, and we have done that. The crowd were definitely with us. The boys have felt that. I am really pleased.

“If there is one thing to say, it’s more shots on target and a more ruthless approach - but they will have learned loads from it and it’s vital minutes in the legs.”
