HumourYou are in: Stoke & Staffordshire > Inside Lives > Humour > The nose The noseBy contributor John It's not every day you get offered a free nose job but when John decided to get his sinus trouble fixed, he had to decide whether or not to take up the offer. John is 28 years old and lives in Congleton. His hobbies are films, cycling and computers. My story is about the dilemma and process of a nose operation - my first ever operation! I chose it because hopefully it's interesting and a bit unusual.

For me, a good night was getting home before six and staying awake long enough to eat. Waking up, my head would ache, my eyes would sting, and it was all being made worse by one thing--my nose. I had no idea that blocked sinuses could cause so much pain. I had a constant cold and toothache--one time it was so bad the only pain relief I could get was rubbing my face against the corner of a coffee table like a cat. My doctor sent me for an X-ray, which showed that my nose had been broken years before and was blocked on both sides. Sorting it out would mean drilling it out. The surgeon told me he was going to drill "two nice fat holes". He also asked if I'd like it straightened at the same time. He said he could even chisel the bump off it. I was fascinated by the idea of having a new, straight nose. My biggest fear was the anaesthetic injection, but on the day I didn't really feel the needle at all. I got as far as three when I tried to count to ten. Coming around afterwards I felt good, in fact really good! I was told this was the effect surgical cocaine used to stem bleeding in the operation. My nose was packed with cotton wading which leaked all night and had to come out the following morning. I'm sure the nurse outside my door thought I was asleep when she shouted down the corridor 'I might need a hand with this one, looks like a bleeder.' Taking a nostril each they pulled out the packing. That first breath, aarrh, was better than any I'd taken before or since. Months later I'm a different person. I can cycle without getting out of breath, my eyes don't sting and I can smell things again! But I don't look any different! I didn't bother with the nose job because I just didn't like the idea. My nose isn't straight, but it's mine, and my sinuses at least are perfect. last updated: 04/07/07 SEE ALSOYou are in: Stoke & Staffordshire > Inside Lives > Humour > The nose
