Stoke Minster: inside and out

成人论坛 Radio Stoke's Lamont Howie goes on a tour of one of Staffordshire's most important churches - St. Peter ad Vincula (St Peter In Chains) in Stoke, better known now as Stoke Minster

The Minster is keen to get more people to visit the Church - not just for services but also to have a look at what it has to offer to the historian/tourist. For opening times, times of services, and more about the church, see its website:

How do you concentrate fourteen hundred years of history into fewer than fourteen pages? That's what Richard Talbot has done in writing his guide to Stoke Minster.

One of North Staffordshire's best known historians, Richard guided 成人论坛 Radio Stoke's Lamont Howie inside and outside Stoke Minster using his short guide to its history.

Talbot's decision in focusing on the important facts takes us from early Pagan worship to twenty first century celebration at St. Peter ad Vincula.

Outside the church, Lamont hears about the famous patrons, like Josiah Wedgwood, whose modest memorial sits beneath some stone arches saved from the early Saxon church. He also hears of the many unnamed buried who were re-sited with the building of the adjacent D-road expansion...

Inside we hear about the famous Minton Hollins wall tiles that adorn the walls, the list of famous past rectors - including Bishop Selwyn, who was also the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand - and the font and altar stone that date from before the Norman Conquest and were brought back to the Minster having been used as flower containers in a Hartshill garden (!)...

Status

The Church is the Civic Church of Stoke-on-Trent and as such is asked to host major events such as the Lord Mayor's Service, Veterans Service, Carol Concerts and more.

It also the funerals of Sir Stanley Matthews and John Ritchie - to name but a few.

It now attracts many tourists as well.
