He tells us his story, from growing up in the city, to scoring two goals in that 1988 final. Imran Sherwani played in all seven matches for Great Britain in the 1988 Olympic Games and was a key member of the squad. He broke the deadlock in the match by scoring against West Germany in the final which Britain won 3-1. He’s played for the national team 45 times, including winning silver in the 1986 World Cup. Sporting linksImran came from a sporting family – his father played hockey for Pakistan and his great uncles played for Stoke City and Port Vale. Imran Sherwani FactsImran Sherwani grew up in Wolstanton He started playing at North Stafford Hockey Club as a teenager alongside his father and brother and trained regularly. Ever since he played in his first match at the age of 14, Imran dreamt of playing in the Olympic Games. He worked as a policeman, but had to leave the Staffordshire force as his training programme became heavier – to get by, he became a newsagent like his father. His own storyImran now works as an independent financial advisor, but still has links with hockey – his three sons regularly play for Cannock Hockey Club.
