Now British Waterways have made available archive video footage of this man made wonder in action! The Anderton Boat Lift near Northwich in Cheshire is a man made engineering wonder. This impressive Victorian structure was built in 1875 and it was the first lift of its kind in the world. Often referred to as the 'Cathedral of the Canals', the lift can carry boats from the听 River Weaver to the Trent and Mersey Canal - 50 feet above! Its designer Edwin Clarke went on to create similar boat lifts on other European canal routes, but Anderton remains the benchmark and the most famous. RestorationIt was in operation for over 100 years but in 1983 it was taken out of action because of structural faults. But in 2002, a 拢7 million restoration saw it back in business after lying silent for nearly two decades. It is one of only two working boat lifts in the United Kingdom.
