Abbey
Ruins
These ruins are all that remain of the original Abbey at Bury St Edmunds,
once the capital of East Anglia. The Abbey was one of the richest
and most powerful Benedictine monasteries in England.
The site had already been in use for nearly three centuries when the
martyred remains of King Edmund were enshrined at the Saxon monastery,
making it a popular place of pilgrimage.
The Abbey was largely dismantled following the Dissolution by Henry
VIII in 1539. The abbey precincts were vast and several gatehouses
were positioned along the boundary walls, but only two have survived
intact, the Great Gate and St James' Gate. |
