The Willis Building

The Willis building in Friars Street, Ipswich was officially opened in June 1975. Designed by Lord Foster, the building has won many awards and is one of the youngest buildings to be given Grade 1 Listed status.

The building is easily recognised by its unique glass cladding - 890 tinted panes, plus another 180 round the restaurant. Three escalators rise up through the central atrium of the building to the rooftop restaurant and the roof itself, complete with lawn and privet hedge. It was from this roof top area that these 360 degree images were taken.

The original site of the building contained shops, housing, a derelict brewery, a gunsmith and saddlers. The roadway was diverted to leave a heart-shaped area. By stretching the plans to the very edge of the site only four floors were needed to meet the original space requirements.
