Comedian Russell Brand

Russell Brand

Hare Krishna to you too, Russell

I have a sneaky suspicion that Russell Brand is on a spiritual pathway to becoming a Hare Krishna devotee. Am I the only one to notice this? More on that later. Russell’s Shame tour was a sell out at the Ipswich Regent.

The audience greeted him with love and enthusiasm as he strolled onto the stage adopting a funny mock-coy stance to the sound of Morrissey's ‘Last of the Famous International Playboys’.Ìý He opened his show with a bit of mingling and get-to-know-your-audience walk around the stalls.Ìý

His fans absolutely adore him.Ìý Hugs from Russell were pleaded for by both men and women and he was a gracious, accommodating host. One lucky Russell look-a-like who managed to get a hug shouted out that his hair smelt nice.Ìý

After a lengthy anecdote about Tim Westwood (and impersonations) he launched into about twenty minutes of ad-libbing.Ìý His crutch was the local Ipswich newspapers.Ìý Admittedly the patience of the audience seemed to drift towards the end of this phase in his show, but he redeemed it with a couple of comical phone calls to people who'd placed classified ads.Ìý So if you were the ladies who got a strange phone call for oak posts and bluish cane chairs on Saturday night, that’s your explanation.Ìý

I couldn't work out if this section of the show was an example of spontaneous, ad-libbing genius or just plain laziness on Russell’s part.Ìý He is a real grafter - with all his work on Big Brother , ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Radio 2 and 6Music,Ìý a weekly sports column for The Guardian, chat shows, quiz shows, The Brits etc.Ìý So who can blame him if wants toÌý wing a section of his show every night?Ìý But how does he find time for all that notorious womanising?

Sex rears its ugly head

After a few more anecdotes about drug busts, threesomes, nut-brushing and spunky water pistols Russell finishes the show with a bit of analysing, a bit of theorizing and a bit of comedy with a few of his famous catchwords thrown in for good measure – 'ball bags', 'dinkle' and ‘the swine’.Ìý It’s what we all wanted to hear.

I can't help thinking that Russell’s not applying himself to his full potential in this stand-up tour.ÌýThe man has so much more intellectual talent to challenge the world with than his show allows and he could do so much more with the public platform he’s been fortunate enough to have achieved.Ìý How about a bit of comedy mixed with an audience with Russell – a Q&A session with his audiences?Ìý Challenge us Russell!Ìý Come on, boy, put it out there.Ìý

And lo, he came amongst us

I can't finish this piece without reviewing Russell’s after-show appearance. What a quiet, unassuming ‘star’.Ìý The man has similar qualities to Princess Diana and a spiritual religious leader all rolled into one.Ìý Before you scoff in disbelief let me explain:Ìý he has what you’d call that ‘Diana magic’ in that his fans idolise him.Ìý When he finished his show he announced that he would be available afterwards for a few autographs and photos, but mainly hugs and kisses.Ìý

I thought this was going to be a bun fight of screaming girls kicking and pinching to try and get a piece of his ass!Ìý Not at all, when Russell appeared in the foyer after the show his aura had such a calming effect on the crowd that we all hushed. He was quietly absorbed into the crowd and moved around the room by a sort of osmosis as he gave spiritual, loving hugs to anybody who asked for them. What surprised me was the number of young alpha hetero (?) males who were as eager for a hug as the rest of the young fillies.Ìý Oh and he did sign a few breasts too.Ìý

Russell oozes love, kindness and humility.Ìý The man is very grounded and I wonder if he's on a spiritual pathway of sorts.Ìý Bhagavad-Gita, not bonking Russell?Ìý Oh and his hair does smell gorgeous, all coiffed and perfumed like an old-fashioned dandy.Ìý Hare Krishna Russell, come back soon.

Send us your pictures of yourselves with Russell:

CALLEN [The Voice]
This guy is the darling of the media at the moment..you cant get away from him! you hear of his blatant womanising..bad behaviour..foul mouthing etc but the fact is this guy is sharp. He thinks on his feet like any good comedien has to and his dandy edwardian campy style is very entertaining in measured doses. CALLEN [The Voice]

Jonathan
Have never actually found him that funny although I think he's a great TV presenter, and does seem a nice man.

Bex
Sure is.I would.

Butros
Saw his last tour on DVD and was not massively impressed, but on the night he was fantastic. For a staunch hetrosexual I had a worrying attraction to him ! Confidence without arrogance is a rare virtue.

Hemi
