What are your thoughts on cycling into work? How does your area fare in terms of cycle lanes?

1214 through Rushmere -no apparent dedicated cycle lane and road too narrow for car to pass safely. tpoo mant cyclist won't use cycle lanes when they are provided

I think its good idea that people take bikes to work rather then taking the car,that is if you live close to your work?I live in holland so taking the bike is very easy and people who bike to work are more fitter than those people who sit in there cars and maybe sit at a desk allday!! Get moving you lazy lot!!!!!

i have suggested to my manager that i may be cycling to work from now on, his response was shocking to say the least. he started by telling me that he has nowhere for me to store my bike and followed it up by stating that he would not give me time at the end of the day to change from my suit into my cycling gear and that under no circumstances am i to leave any clothing at work. he also mentioned that if i where late due to a puncture that my bonus would be docked. i found this rather discoraging but also saw it as a challenge so i infact will be cycling to work whether he likes it or not.

Dear David! just watched your mini recording. I have always biked or walked 3.5miles to work, and back.Why do you want a car? My god gave me a good set of legs, and my motto is use them or lose them, I am now 67 years old & I walk 4 -6 miles every day! This morning a saw a lovely Barn Owl in flight. every moring 6-9 deer, woodpeckers, herons, rabbits "Rings" of March Hares & of course pidgeons & plenty of rubbish

There are hardly any cycle lanes - maybe we should take a leaf out of Holland's book! I think alot more people would get on their bike instead of go to the gym if they felt safe on the roads but unfortunately in this country, cars/lorries etc dominate our roads and scare people half to death. I cycle when I can though despite the above and love it. I have found numerous country lanes to escape and get some peace and quiet whilst keeping fit. Suffolk is wonderful for cycling!

It would do us well to remember that the motor car has been a medium of mass transportation for around the past 40 or so years. The train for around 160 years. And the cycle as a means of general transport for around 160 year also. The car initially was a grea boon. But it has outlived its usefullness. It was only when car growth started to accellerate in the late fifites, was there a conmcomitant growth in roads. Were it not for the car and its inexhaustable demand for more space, we would not need to spend the money we have been doing untill recently on destroying our beautifull country to make ay for the selfish, wastefull car. The motorist in fact gets the car on the cheap. The car takes up a huge amount of space. The cyclist hardly any. The more cycles there are on the road, the more room for those who insist on driving. The The cost to us and to our descendants of this monster (i.e. the motor car) is and will be huge. I speak as someone who has owned a car for around 30 years, been a driver for about 43 years, cycled for over 50 years: driven around 750,000 miles and cycled around 100,000 miles. While I only offer an opinion, I have to say that the motor car is no longer a luxury humankind can afford. Its use is immoral, unacceptable and wastefull.

well ANNE HAYWARD what a bitter selfish narrow minded view you hold! You pay for the 'Privilege' to use the roads for the following reasons ie the pollution your car causes to the environment and in its manufacture-the umpteen services needed to keep you on the road like highway maintainance police nhs etc etc so aim your anger at the government for the high costs not the thoughtful cyclist whos helping the environment and keeping fit toboot. would you be happier if taxes were imposed on horse riders pedestrains who walk on the roads? my advise is leave the car at home, zip up and get on yer bike! A1071 won't fit a cycle lane. It's narrow enough as it is!If there were more cyclists and less cars you wouldn't need more cycle lanes.Keep it up!

I do my best to cycle the 30 mile round trip 2 or 3 times a week.To be honest I believe cyclists should share the roads with cars and not be intimidated off onto badly maintained cycle paths .

When cyclists pay to use their cycles on the roads they will be entitled to space, but those who are paying through the nose for the 'privilege' of using the restricted carriageways should have the freedom to do so unimpeded.

I love cycling too but one risks their life every time you take a main highway. its better to ride on the pavement and risk the wrathe of pedestrians rather then the risk of being side swiped by some 40 tonne lorry or or stressed car driver late for work etc the council needs to review the poor cyclists lot and see if they can improve things although Ipswich overall is quite good. I use the cycle lane between Needham Market and Stowmarket daily.It is perfectly adequate yet I am amazed at how many cyclists still use the road, even in the dark winter mornings. I have even seen one on the road in the dark, in fog, with no lights.Incredible

Re. David Butcher's video on cycling to work. I use my cycle a lot, and have a round trip of 30 miles to my office. I travel fair weather or foul. David's comments are all true (though I am very committed to doing something about the planet). As he says, most cars and lorries are considerate. There is the odd 'shouter', but not very many. Well done David. Such a good idea to make a video. We must encourage MANY more drivers to leave the car at home. PS you could get a good track pump to inflate your tyres: no need for an electrical pump.
