Maxine Spooner at Tickled Pink in Lavenham

Maxine welcomes you into her parlour

From tickled pink to scared witless

Tickle Manor - the home of the Tickled Pink tearoom - was built in 1532 on the main street in medieval Lavenham. Its ghostly reputation has led to visits by Derek Acorah and the Most Haunted TV programme. I went ghost-spotting for Halloween.

Maxine Spooner took over the premises a couple of years ago. To begin with she was sceptical about tales of the ghostly presence.

But as time has passed, she's had to admit to seeing things that just can't be explained and says there's definitely something going on.

Customers using the upstairs toilet have found the door mysteriously opening even though it's been bolted from the inside - and some claim to have heard church bells ringing although there's been no practise going on.

The stopped-clock at the Lavenham tearooms

The stopped-clock

At听the top of where the original stairs were situated no clock will work. They've tried various clocks - from battery to grandfather - but they always stop at ten to eight. The clock in the new part of the shop works perfectly.

A blonde moment

One afternoon Maxine was upstairs tidying up the tearoom ahead of closing time. She glanced down the stairs and saw a blonde figure shrouded in mist.

She says there were no features or distinctions and to begin with she thought it must be one of her waitresses called Lizzie. She turned back for a second glance but the figure had disappeared.

All she could see was Lizzie across the landing doing the vacuuming.

When she mentioned this, Lizzie said she'd served an identical looking woman at one of the downstairs tables but when she returned with her order, the woman had vanished.

It's not just visual appearances either - sometimes staff upstairs have heard children singing Greensleeves - and one day when Maxine had heard that very sound, she went down to the kitchen to find one of her waitresses - a teenage girl - humming the same tune.

Maxine asked her where she'd heard it and she didn't know.

Most ghostly appearances seem to occur around closing time. Maxine thinks that the ghost allows her to use the house to go about her business, but then play a few tricks just as they're shutting-up shop.

She says her son once tried to spend the night there.听 But he went home after he saw a lady leaning on her elbows on the stairs staring at him. She says she's happy to hear from anyone who'd like to have a go themselves...

my husband and i visited the tickled pink tea rooms in june last year.. my husband swears he's saw someone with a dog walk from the front door through to the kitchen (out of the corner of his eye). When we asked the staff if there was, in fact, someone walk through with a dog.. the staff looked at us if we were quite mad. Shortly after that, we read the back of the menu that tells the story of how the place was haunted. admittedly there was nothing said about someone in a black trench coat with a black dog
