FACTS
One
historic monument has been lost every day since the end of
World War Two.
There are 17,000 historic buildings and monuments in the UK
at risk.
On an average weekend, more people visit historic buildings
in the UK than go to football matches.
This
summer 成人论坛2 will be travelling all over the UK looking at
our architectural heritage. Each programme in the series will
feature three buildings from one geographical area.
Viewers will then be asked to vote to help save one of our
thirty most endangered buildings.
Work
is now underway restoring Freston Tower on the banks of the River
Orwell. This six storey, Grade II* Tudor tower, with its distinctive
blue brick pattern, was built around 1549 by Thomas Gooding.
Restoration
work on the tower began in spring 2003
There
are different theories as to why he might have built such a spectacular
structure. It may have been a lookout tower, an extravagant folly,
or part of a pleasure garden.
The tower has 33 windows which become more elaborate the higher
you go, and they all have wonderful views.
The Tower was given to the Landmark Trust by Mrs Claire Hunt, who
has cared for it since 1962. Although it is in relatively good condition,
there is still a considerable amount of repair work needed as well
as alterations to the accommodation.
