Imagine a land where an evil mayor has banished music to try to stop the biggest music festival in the land.
Somewhere off the south coast of England lies Summertime Island, home of the famous Summertime Festival.
The new Mayor of the island has hidden the magical ingredients, which make up music!
Now nobody is able to sing, play an instrument or even just clap their hands.

Hello everyone, how you doing? [CLAPS HANDS] I'm YolanDa Brown and it is so great to see you all. And hello to everybody watching us from schools around the UK. We have got a fun packed show for you today, and we're going to introduce you to some very special music. Today is just the start of Bring the Noise, and if you want to learn an instrument or you just wanna getinvolved in music, then you have come to the right place. On our website we've got of loads of fun songs and simple resources for you to bring music to life. Today, we are going to play our new songs for you live for the very first time ever. Can I get a whoo? Oh, that's good. And if those of you watching want to sing along, you can download your song sheets from our website,. So are you ready? Well first of all, I want to introduce you to some friends of mine. Meet my band over here. First we have Ollie on keyboard. Can I get a big clap for Ollie? [CLAPS HANDS] Oh, great clapping. On guitar, we have Dave Niskin. [CLAPS HANDS] Very good. On bass, Rick Leon James. [CLAPS HANDS] And on drums, Talbot Wilson.[CLAPS HANDS] And with us today, our two wonderful backing singers, Phoebe Taylor and Tom Barber-Redmore. [CLAPS HANDS] And I play, what do I play? Does anyone know? The saxophone, well done. [LAUGHS] And you might have noticed these other people with instruments just behind me here. Who are they? Well they are all here with my friend Omer. Say Hi,Omer.
Omer Meir:
Hi hello, I'm Omer. I'm the Chief Conductor of the 成人论坛 Philharmonic. Say hello everybody. [CLAPS HANDS] So I, I thought I might introduce you to several groups of the orchestra, so you know them better.
YolanDa Brown:
That would be great.
Omer Meir:
So we're gonna start with the strings. We have violins, we have violas, cellos and contrabasses. Let's play something.
YolanDa Brown:
Oh, that sounded beautiful.
Omer Meir:
Was nice? Yeah. So let's move on. We have now the woodwinds. Look, very special instruments. We have oboes, flutes, clarinets and bassoons.
Omer Meir:
How was that?
YolanDa Brown:
Lovely, yes.
Omer Meir:
So, then we go to the bright sound. [LAUGHTER] We have our brass section. Tuba, trombones, trumpets and horns.
YolanDa Brown:
Fantastic.
YolanDa Brown:
I see what you mean by bright.
Omer Meir:
Was that loud enough? It was loud enough. Oh yeah.
YolanDa Brown:
That was loud, we like that didn't we? Yes. [CLAPS HANDS]
Omer Meir:
So maybe. It was okay, yeah. So maybe a bit louder we can still go with our percussion, please.
YolanDa Brown:
Very good. Oh was. Thank you so much Omer, and to the orchestra.
Omer Meir:
Quite impressive I would say.
YolanDa Brown:
Give them a big clap. [CLAPS HANDS] That's lovely. And do you know what? The orchestra make an amazing musical sound. So, shall we kick things off by playing the Bring the Noise theme tune with the band and the orchestra together? Shall we do it Omer? What do you think?
Omer Meir:
We can try.
YolanDa Brown:
Okay, we will try. [LAUGHTER] [LAUGHS]
Omer Meir:
I'm not sure.
YolanDa Brown:
Well I think that we could use the help of somebody singing with us, so please welcome to the stage my very good friend, Mr JB Gill. Big round of applause. [CLAPS HANDS]
JB Gill:
Hi YolandDa.
YolanDa Brown:
Hello JB, how you doing?
JB Gill:
I'm very well, thank you. Hi everyone. I am so excited to be here singing with you, so shall we do it? Let's bring the noise. Whoo!
YolanDa Brown:
Yes! [CLAPS HANDS] Oh, that sounded amazing JB, thank you so much for singing with us. Will you come back and sing with us again later?
JB Gill:
Absolutely. I'll see you guys later.
YolanDa Brown:
Thanks JB, bye! [LAUGHS] Oh, that was so much fun wasn't it? [NOISE] Ooh, oh no, what's that?
YolanDa Brown:
Oh, I'm so sorry. I thought I'd turned that off. You know, it's my friend from Do You Know, Maddie Moate. I'm really sorry everyone, but I think it might be important. I'd better answer it. Hi Maddie, hi what's going on?
Maddie Moate:
Hi YolandDa.
YolanDa Brown:
Hi.
Maddie Moate:
Hi everyone. Wow, you look busy. Okay. I am sorry to interrupt, but I really need your help. I've just arrived at the Summertime Island Music Festival where I'm supposed to be performing my new song about robots, but there's a new mayor of Summertime Island and he's cancelled the music festival. And to make sure that nobody can perform, he's even hidden the magicingredients. We need to make music. So now, nobody can sing or play an instrument or even clap along.
YolanDa Brown:
Oh no! That mayor sounds awful. How could they do such a thing? Music is so important. Do you think that we could help Maddie? Do you think we could help her? Yes. Okay. Good. Don't worry Maddie, I've got a whole bunch of musical helpers here and they can sing. They're really good at singing and I've also got my friend, Omer and the orchestra, so we will help.
Maddie Moate:
Oh, thank you so much everybody. Right, I actually made a video of the mayor on my phone, so you can see what he's like. Hang on, I should be able to play it. Here you go.
Mayor Hacker:
I'm [Magadhi] Dog, new mayor of old Summertime Island. That makes me considerably more important than any of you lot. Oh, yeah. Now listen to me, things are gonna change around here cockers. I'm fed up with this stupid Summertime Music Festival that happens every year, and it's nothing to do with the fact that they never invite me. No it's not that! I'm lividabout that little bit. So from right now, music is banned on the island. And to make sure none of you try sneakily making music when I'm not looking, [NOISE] Who was that? I said no music! Mm-mm. I've hidden the magic ingredients of music. I've taken rhythm, melody and cockers. I've taken dynamics, whatever that is, and I'm not giving them back! You can't make me,I'm mayor!
YolanDa Brown:
Oh dear. Oh, no.
Maddie Moate:
I told you.
YolanDa Brown:
You did.
Maddie Moate:
Yes, I know, he's awful. Please help me bring music back to Summertime Island so the festival can go ahead. You're going to need to collect the musical ingredients of rhythm, dynamics and melody, and bring them with you to the island. Do you think you can do that?
YolanDa Brown:
I think we can. I think we can Maddie, yes.
Maddie Moate:
Okay, the mayor's coming, thank you so much. Bye YolandDa, bye everyone.
YolanDa Brown:
Bye Maddie, bye. Bye! Oh! Oh, my goodness. I really hope we can help. Omer, we can find those musical ingredients in the music that we play can't we?
Omer Meir:
Yeah, that's right YolandDa. We just need to play the music and collect them on the way.
YolanDa Brown:
Okay. Well it is a long way to Summertime Island, so we're going to need some people to help us on our journey. I like that sound. Can you shake your shoulders with me. Shake your shoulders everyone. Whoo! Someone's coming.Oh. Everybody it's Sharlene Hector. [CLAPS HANDS]
Sharlene Hector:
Hello everyone. Hi Omer, how are you doing? You alright?
YolanDa Brown:
Oh, Sharlene, are we pleased to see you. You see, we're on a mission to find the secret ingredients to restore music to Summertime Island. Can you help us, please?
Sharlene Hector:
Well, you know I love music and I love singing, so of course I'll help.
YolanDa Brown:
Yes!
Sharlene Hector:
When I'm singing, I always think the first thing to do is to get your body nice and warmed up and moving, and so I always like to stand up.
YolanDa Brown:
Okay. Stand up everybody onto your feet. Oh, you look great. Wonderful. Good. What do we do next?
Sharlene Hector:
And then I put my hands in the air.
YolanDa Brown:
Alright, hands in the air everybody, and wave them from side to side.
Sharlene Hector:
It's really important, when you play or sing, not to worry about what you look like. Just get right into the music and move with the rhythm, come on.
Sharlene Hector:
That was amazing. Well done everyone. What fantastic moving to the rhythm.
YolanDa Brown:
Oh, well done, you can sit down now everyone. I think we're well and truly warmed up, don't you?
Sharlene Hector:
Yeah, definitely.
YolanDa Brown:
And I think that we've discovered our first piece of the musical puzzle, rhythm. A rhythm is a pattern of sounds of different lengths.
Sharlene Hector:
Yes, we've earned it. Everyone sang, moved and played with beautiful rhythmic patterns.
YolanDa Brown:
Oh, thank you so much Sharlene. You have been amazing. Hasn't she been amazing everyone? [CLAPS HANDS] And will you be able to help us some more later on?
Sharlene Hector:
Of course. I'll help all I can. And if you need me, all you have to do is sing, Bring the Noise, just like that and I'll hear you, but to be honest, I'm getting a bit chilly now, so I think I'm gonna go and warm up.
YolanDa Brown:
Okay, but before you go, so all we have to do is sing, Bring the Noise and you'll hear us and come to us?
Sharlene Hector:
That's right, yes.
YolanDa Brown:
[LAUGHS] Okay, brilliant. Thank you so much, Sharlene.
Sharlene Hector:

YolanDa Brown:
Bye. [LAUGHS] Oh, Brr r. I think she's right, it is getting a bit cold in here. Oh, I need to warm up yes, but before we get moving, let's find out a little bit more about rhythm and why it's so important from a very talented composer, someone that writes music, Anna Meredith.
Commentator:
Bring the Noise.
YolanDa Brown:
Omer, I'm freezing. I think we need to travel through winter before we can get to the warmth of Summertime Island. Do you know a piece of music about winter?
Omer Meir:
Yeah, there is actually a piece called, Winter by composer called, Vivaldi. Yeah. He lived in Venice a long time ago and he wrote beautiful concerti, one of them called, Winter because it expresses somehow the coldness of the winter through dynamics, and dynamics can make us feel different things. It can be sometimes loud and soft and we can feel cold or warm. And thisconcerto is originally written for a violin, an orchestra, but in our version we have my friend, [Yaki] here, playing on a mandolin.
YolanDa Brown:
Everybody say, hi [Yaki].
Omer Meir:
Hello [Yaki]. So mandolin is quite a unique instrument as you see um, but it's not unfamiliar to Vivaldi, because he used to work in an orphanage where he had a lot of kids playing different instruments, including a lot of them playing mandolin.
YolanDa Brown:
Ha!
Omer Meir:
So this is a tribute maybe to some kids in the orphanage. And I will play actually on a very nice instrument also, which is called the harpsichord. And it fits very well the winter, because it has quite a cold sound. Yeah, so you will see how cold it gets.
Omer Meir:
The feeling of winter made me so sleepy and so cold.
YolanDa Brown:
No, no, Omer, please try and stay awake. Oh no. Oh, did you enjoy that piece of music everyone?
YolanDa Brown:
Oh, great clapping. And did you notice the dynamics, how loud, and then how quiet the music got? How did it make you feel? Good. Oh, I like that. Well let's find out a bit more about dynamics from the Russian composer, Tchaikovsky.
Commentator:
Bring the Noise.
YolanDa Brown:
Oh no, it's so cold that the orchestra has gone into hibernation, they've all fallen asleep. Oh no, quick everyone, we need to wake them up. There is no time to waste, it's still a long way to Summertime Island. We're going to need all the help we can get. If only Sharlene and JB were still here. Wait, Sharlene said we could call her if we sang, Bring the Noise. So let's all sing it togetherand try and sing it as loud as you can really. After four, here we go. 1, 2, 3, 4. Bring the Noise. That's good. Bring the Noise. I can't hear you. Bring the Noise. Even louder. Bring the Noise. Yeah. Bring the Noise. One more time. Bring the Noise. Well done, give yourselves a big, big clap. [CLAPS HANDS] That was really loud.
Sharlene Hector:
We heard you calling.
YolanDa Brown:
You heard us calling, I'm so glad to see you two again. Will you help us wake up this sleepy orchestra. We need to use dynamics to be as loud as we can.
Sharlene Hector:
Hey, JB what do you think? Will you sing with me?
JB Gill:
Absolutely. Let's do it again and bring the noise.
JB Gill:
Wow. The orchestra are finally awake, but YolanDa and the band have already left for Summertime Island. We better try and catch up. And we've discovered our final piece of the puzzle, melody. And melody is another word for tune.
Sharlene Hector:
You sang so beautifully everyone, well done.
JB Gill:
That's right. Together we sang a great melody. Let's find out a bit more about melody and what it means from the legendary reggae musician, Bob Marley.
Commentator:
Bring the Noise.
Omer Meir:
And you know what? Everything is gonna be alright. Next, we've got a great piece with fantastic melody, great rhythm and lots of dynamics, and it's gonna help us catch up with the band. Let's try it.
Omer Meir:
I really think-- You know, I really think we're catching up with the band. Thank you. I really think we're catching up the band, and we've almost made it to Summertime Island. I can really feel the summertime. And oh, what's that?
YolanDa Brown:
Okay everybody, we wanna see you dancing along. We need to get to Summertime Island.
YolanDa Brown:
Wanna stand up with us, we're gonna do some really good dances. Come and join in.
YolanDa Brown:
Very good. Let's do it again.
YolanDa Brown:
Let's all start. Here we go. 1, 2, 3 jump.
YolanDa Brown:
Whoo! Give me that one more time for Tom and Phoebe. [CLAPS HANDS] Guess what everybody? With that amazing dancing, we have arrived on Summertime Island. Can I get a big yeah! [LAUGHS] And with a little bit of help from our friends, we found the musical ingredients of rhythm, melody and dynamics. Now, we can play music again on the island. We need to makesure that this festival can go ahead. But I think that all of the singers and musicians are still hiding, because they're scared of the awful mayor. I wonder where he is? Mm.
Mayor Hacker:
I heard that, who are you calling awful? Oh, I don't know what you lot think you're doing showing up with all these instruments. Look at them all. I've never seen so many all in one place before. Is that a trombone? Music is banned on this island by order of moi. And that's French for me that is cocker. The Summertime Festival is cancelled, now get out of here! Go on, get out!
YolanDa Brown:
But mayor, you don't understand how important music is. You can't just ban music and hide it away. No, you can't, no. You can't. [LAUGHS] You can't. Do you think it's alright to ban music? Do you think it's okay? No, you can't ban music and just not play it ever again, because music makes us happy. Music makes us want to dance. Music makes us smile. We've got some goodsmiles here. The best way to get rid of a mayor is to fire him.
YolanDa Brown:
Well. [CLAPS HANDS] What do you think about this Mr Mayor. After three, let's all shout, you're fired. You ready? 1, 2, 3. You're fired!
Mayor Hacker:
Oh no! I can't believe it. How dare you! So rude. I never wanted to be a mayor. I never wanted to boss people about and make them sad. I wanted to be a lumberjack. No wait, not a lumberjack, a singer that's it. Why don't you ever let me sing at your festival? Oh go on, please, please let me sing, please!
YolanDa Brown:
Oh. Well, ex mayor Hacker, now that we've fought back the musical magical ingredients which make up music, the show can go on. But where is Maddie? She must still be hiding. She doesn't know that the festival is back on. Has anyone seen her? Have you seen Maddie? Omer, have you seen Maddie?
Omer Meir:
No, I haven't. Have you seen her? No.
YolanDa Brown:
Oh, no one's seen her. Well we're going to have to make enough noise that Maddie can hear us. Everyone, let's see if we can bring her back by singing, Bring the Noise again. Are you ready? Well we sure did, yes we did. And between us, the orchestra, the band, we have fired the mayor and music is back on Summertime Island.
Maddie Moate:
Oh amazing, so that means that the Summertime Festival is back on?
YolanDa Brown:
Yes.
Maddie Moate:
Yeah. Oh, but do you know what? I've been looking for some people to help me get the rhythm going for my new song, which is all about robots. Do you think you can help? Oh, okay.
YolanDa Brown:
I think we can help. Can we help everybody? [LAUGHS] Okay, let's bring back Sharlene and JB to help us out too. Give them a big clap as they come. [CLAPS HANDS]
Maddie Moate:
That is a good idea and great. Actually YolanDa, you can help me with this one as well.
YolanDa Brown:
Okay.
Maddie Moate:
But I'm going to need everybody in the audience to get up on their feet. That's it, stand up. And if you're watching in a classroom and you want to get standing as well, maybe split yourself into two groups. So we need a beat. Right. Talbot the drummer, can you give us a clap please. And with our singers, the band, the orchestra, there was no chance that music could be banned from the island for long, you know, but it's just the start of the Bring the Noise musical journey.
Maddie Moate:
Yeah, that's right. So, over the next 12 months, there will all kinds of exciting musical activities for you to try, and songs for you to learn on the Bring the Noise website.
YolanDa Brown:

They'll journey across the land, collecting the missing magical musical ingredients they need to restore music to Summertime Island in time for the festival.
