Mums / carers, all they do 鈥 and a special day to say thank you!

Before the programme

  • Look at the focus image. Who might you give these to and why?
  • Talk together about the people who care for you at home. Make a list of as many things as you can think of that they do.
  • Talk about Mothering Sunday / Mothers鈥 Day. How do children in the class celebrate this special day?
  • Why is it a good idea to have special days when we say 鈥榯hank you鈥 to people?
  • How do you like to say 鈥榯hank you鈥 on Mothers鈥 Day?

Programme content:

  1. Welcome and introduction Ben and some listeners are getting ready for another special day. I wonder if you can guess which one it is鈥

  2. Song 鈥楾ogether鈥 (All about our school, no. 13). Encourage the children to join in with as much as they can.

  3. Vox pops Children say why their mum is the best!

  4. Story My mum鈥檚 fantastic! An original story by Rachel Boxer. Hannah鈥檚 mum is the best mum ever! But one day she tells her friends about some things that her mum can鈥檛 really do鈥 What will her friends say at her birthday party when they see that Hannah鈥檚 mum is not really Supermum?Or perhaps she really is鈥

  5. Reflection On all that mums / carers do and how you鈥檒l say thank you. Ensure everyone is listening carefully.

  6. Opportunity for prayer Thanking God for all who care for us. The children can listen or join in with 鈥楢men鈥 at the end if they wish to make the prayer their own.

After the programme:

Talk about the story

  • Why did Hannah say her mum was SuperMum?
  • Do you think her friends believed what she said?
  • Why didn鈥檛 Hannah tell her friends the truth afterwards?
  • Why did Hannah say that it was a 鈥榥arrow escape鈥 on the way home in the car with Dad?
  • What food do you think Hannah鈥檚 mum prepared? What might have been in the presents?
  • What does your mum make for you when it鈥檚 your birthday?
  • How do you think Hannah felt at the end of the story, when she told her friends the truth about her mum?
  • Is your mum like Hannah鈥檚 mum? What 鈥榮uperpowers鈥 does she possess?!

Follow-up activities:

  • Make and send Mothers鈥 Day / Thank you cards to celebrate Mothers鈥 Day.
  • Play the 鈥楳y mum鈥檚 the best because鈥︹ game as a class during Circle Time. Did everyone manage to say something different? You could use the ideas generated during this game to add a personal touch to your cards!
  • Make a bunch of paper flowers to give on Mothering Sunday. Use straws as stems and tissue paper for flower heads. Wrap in pretty paper.
  • Make a Mothers鈥 Day promise box. Children write a pledge to post into the box as a promise of something they will do on the day to make it special for their mum / carer.
  • Find out about the original traditions of Mothering Sunday, as mentioned by Ben in the programme, when maids or servants were allowed a day off to visit their families.
  • Draw your mum / carer as 鈥楽uperMum鈥. Write a description of why they are SuperMum underneath.
