It's much easier for children to see and hear how you form words when you get down to their level.

Sitting down on the floor with them for a teddy bear's picnic game can be a great way to start.

See mum having a go in the film below.

How getting down to your child's level helps them learn

It helps your child to:

  • See what you are doing or looking at
  • Hear your words and sentences more clearly
  • Show you what they are interested in
  • See clues to communicate and understand what is being said, as they watch lip movements, eyes, and facial expressions

If you get down on the floor as you play with your child, you can more easily see what they're interested in as they play. When you can see what's grabbing their attention, talk about those things with them, naming them and describing what they're doing.

When you're face to face with them, your child can more easily see how you are forming your words.
