What happens at an antenatal class and should dads go?
I think it's a great idea for dads to attend antenatal classes. It will give you both an idea of what your birth will be like and of the options available. Antenatal classes are a great opportunity for expectant parents to learn about labour and birth as well as how to care for a newborn.
Most NHS trusts offer education packages free of charge so it's a great idea to ask your midwife what's available in your area. It's important that you're both to be on-board with what you would like to happen in every eventuality, as it may be the dad's role on the day to be his partner's voice and to advocate for her and her wishes. It can also be a good chance to scope out the hospital and work out logistical things like locating the maternity ward, how the buzzer system works and where the nearest car park is.
Some trusts may also show you the different birthing rooms available so it won't feel so unfamiliar on the big day. Dads also learn how to support their partner in labour and get important tips on those first few days back at home. Pregnancy is a life-changing event for both mums and dads so attending antenatal classes together can be a great way to ensure you both feel prepared.
