Nestled far below the Tyne Bridge lies the Swing Bridge. Designed and constructed by Sir W.G. Armstrong and Company Limited, of Elswick, the bridge was first used in 1876. The bridge is operated by hydraulic engines and has swung hundreds of thousands of times over the years to allow vessels to pass through. Inside the bridge, the machinery is in immaculate condition and that is testament to the hard work of the team who work there. George Fenwick has been the bridge engineer for 18 years and here he speaks about the job.
