"I have always enjoyed markets - vegetable, flea, car-boot and antique. I like the mystery of old things. Where did they come from? Where have they been? What are they for? How old are they? Who owned them?
These two objects come from the same era - the early 1900s - and they both exist in the here and now. They both interest me for this reason: that they span around a hundred years - the twentieth century, and both present what's happened without showing it specifically. They both show the passage of time.
The materiality of the birthday scripture textbook has such a different quality from the contemporary glossy photograph printed from the old negative of the painted studio backdrop. These contrasting materials fascinate me, and how facts can change from being facts. That is, they can come to have more general or abstract meanings, and for me, these very specific moments tell of the eternal, and I consciously experience time's passing."
