They helped the nation dig in for victory. Now, with rising food prices, the humble allotment is back on the front line. Can councils cope with the demand?

People are going crazy for allotments in Wrexham. So much so, the council is having to divide up plots in order to meet the demand. Wrexham Council claims this is a creative and efficient way of dealing with the surge.

Andrea Evans, the secretary for Wrexham Allotment Association, agrees with the council and is very excited about recent developments. We meet Andrea and two plot holders, one who's happy with his plot, the other who could do with more land.

In Bridgend, the story is different. Demand for plots is not so high, and Bridgend County Borough Council needs allotment land for new developments.

We follow the story of two allotments in the borough. Coychurch Road allotments were relocated due to the building of the new ASDA store. Magazine Street allotments in Caerau want to gain a greater degree of protection from development projects by gaining 'statutory' status.

Do you live in Wales and work an allotment? Or perhaps you're still on a waiting list? Send us your stories and we'll publish them here.
