Globesity With 1.6 billion people overweight worldwide, fat is now recognised as a major global health threat - even in the developing world.
In this two-part series, presenter Paul Bakibinga - who has battled with his weight all of his life - examines the global impact of this growing epidemic, hears from those who are affected by it, and compares their experiences to his own. Part One: Obesity and Poverty Rates of obesity in the developing world are fast approaching levels similar to those in industrialised nations. According to the World Health Organisation, there are twice as many overweight as the 800 million who are undernourished. Paul travels to the suburbs and townships of South Africa to meet other people struggling with their weight and to find out what lies behind the obesity explosion. Part Two: Fighting Fat With the growing economic and health costs related to obesity worldwide, where do we begin in the fight against fat - and what are the implications if we don't? Paul Bakibinga explores some of the ways individuals, communities and governments are trying to tackle obesity. He travels from South Africa to Denmark, where nearly a third of the population has abandoned their bicycles - and 42% are overweight. The Danish government and civil society have started to step in by passing legislation and creating initiatives to help prevent the disease. But what do these interventions really mean if you are already obese? |
