Aaron Copland is one of the most respected American classical composers to emerge from the 20th century. He wanted to compose music that was truly American and reflected its traditions and culture. Copland wanted to liberate his music from European influence and became a spokesman for the advancement of indigenous American music. By incorporating popular forms of American music such as jazz and folk into his compositions, he created music that was unique and innovative. He travelled throughout the world conducting live performances of his music and inspired many new composers.
