Conveying the future in German can be done in several ways - by using werden, by combining the present tense with future time phrases, or by using phrases like ich hoffe, ich plane zu, ich habe vor.
We use the future tense in German to talk about our plans for the future. This could be what you are going to have for tea this evening, or something you will do in many years to come.
In English it can mean that you 'will' or are 'going to' do something.
There are three steps to forming the future tense in German.
Select your personal pronounA personal pronoun can replace a noun. It refers to who or what you are talking about in a sentence, eg I, he, she, they., eg ich, du, wir etc.
Use part of the verb werden as an auxiliary verbA 'helping' verb that is used to form the perfect tense. It goes with the past participle and is the verb which stays in the second position in the sentence. The auxiliary verbs in German are haben and sein..
Select the infinitiveThe part of the verb found in the dictionary. It is the basic form of a verb without a subject, and the equivalent of English 'to...' verbs, and usually ends in -en, -n, -ern, -eln in German, eg spielen - to play. verb you want to use. This goes to the end of the clause or sentence.
