German work ethic
Description
An English couple ask their German guests what they think of Britain and discuss work and the workplace with them. The German speakers say that the British work more hours but produce less. The British couple are surprised to learn that the Germans are not allowed to do things at work which they take for granted. One German woman explains that she was horrified when she was in England to hear colleagues discussing their private lives or making plans for the evening, as this is not permitted in Germany. Private emails and phone calls are not allowed either.
Classroom Ideas
Provide students with a cloze text with information from the clip. This could be differentiated by being in German or English as appropriate and could be peer marked. The German version could provide the opportunity to revise the vocabulary of social media and workplace activities, leading to a possible pair work activity requiring students to make up and read out sentences in German about the workplace. Their partner then has to say who does the activity mentioned eg 鈥榙ie Deutschen鈥 or 鈥榙ie Briten鈥.
