After an initial campaign to stop the closure of Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow failed, Dr Jean Turner stood and was elected as an independent MSP. One time First Minister, Jack McConnell talks about the role of public consultation on deciding on legislation. When the Scottish Executive proposed to make it illegal to smack children under three, a public survey carried out by the Scottish Parent Teacher Council brought a reverse in government policy.
Classroom Ideas
Following the clip, students could work in groups to consider and research examples of when public opinion has and has not influenced political decisions. They could present their findings to the class. Students could then answer the following extended response essay, based on the clip: Within the clip, Jack McConnel says 鈥淧ublic opinion does not form decision-making鈥. Critically examine this view.
