Watch the slideshow below and answer the questions about adding and subtracting mass.
Can you work out the total mass of the oranges and apples?
Remember 1000g = 1kg
The mass of the oranges is 400g and the mass of the apples is 600g. The total mass of the oranges and apples is 400g + 600g = 1000g, which is 1kg.
What is the difference between the mass of the oranges and apples? 600g of apples - 400g of oranges = 200g. The apples are 200g heavier than the oranges.
The mass of the bananas is 650g and the mass of the strawberries is 300g. The total mass of the bananas and strawberries is 650 + 300 = 950g.
What is the difference between the mass of the bananas and strawberries? 650g of bananas - 300g of strawberries = 350g. The bananas are 350g heavier than the strawberries.
The mass of the cheese is 1kg and the mass of the melon is 750g. When you have kilograms and grams, you add the kilograms first, then add the grams. The total mass is 1kg + 750g = 1kg 750g.
The mass of the cheese is 2kg and 800g and the mass of the melon is 1kg 700g. How do we work out the total mass? Add the kilograms first and then the grams. 2kg + 1kg = 3kg, then 800 + 700g = 1kg 500g (remember 1000g=1kg). Then add 3kg +1kg 500g = 4kg 500g.
