Recognise and use thousandths

Place value chart shows numbers beyond the decimal point.

Beyond the decimal point we have tenths, hundredths and thousandths.

Thousandths can be represented as a fraction and as a decimal.

Place value charts

Look at the structure of a place value chart and the relationship between 1, \( \frac{1}{10} \) \( \frac{1}{100} \) and \( \frac{1}{1000} \).

  • 10 tenths = 1 whole

  • 10 hundredths = 1 tenth

  • 10 thousandths = 1 hundredth

A place value chart split into ones, tenths and hundredths and thousandths.

Fractions and decimals

Cards showing decimals and their equivalent fractions.

These cards show 1 \( \frac{1}{10}\) \( \frac{1}{100}\) and \( \frac{1}{1000} \) and their equivalent decimals.

One is ten times the size of one tenth.

1= 10 x \( \frac{1}{10} \)

One tenth is ten times the size of one hundredth.

\( \frac{1}{10}\) = 10 x \( \frac{1}{100}\)or \( \frac{10}{100}\)

One hundredth is ten times the size of one thousandth.

\( \frac{1}{100}\) = 10 x \( \frac{1}{1000}\) or \( \frac{10}{1000}\)

Example 1

Let鈥檚 look at some different examples of 0, 2, 7 and 9, positioned in a place value chart.

Can you see the relationship between the number and the ones, tenths, hundredths and thousandths that is made up of?

The numbers 0279 - 0.279, 2.709 and 9.072 placed in different positions on a place value chart and displayed as fractions

Example 2

We can also use a number line to plot thousandths.

Let's show 0.758 on a number line.

There is 1 hundredth between 0.75 and 0.76 and the 1 hundredth is divided into 10 increments.

1 hundredth = 10 thousandths, so these increments represent the thousandths.

0.758 displayed as a decimal, fraction and on a numberline between 0.75 and 0.76

0.758 is eight thousandths more than 0.75.

0.75 + 0.008 = 0.758

0.758 is two thousandths less than 0.76.

0.76 - 0.002 = 0.758
