From 2001 to 2004, Nicholas Worthington was British Waterways' canal manager for Birmingham and the Black Country. He looked after the direct labour force that maintained the canals and oversaw projects and events.

While working in the Black Country, he carried a digital camera with him and photographed the canals that run through our region. Over the years he built up a "vast collection" of photographs, "I just took them as I walked the towpath or boated." says Nick.

Nick grew up in Rowley Regis. Although his current job as an Operations Auditor for British Waterways takes him all over the UK, the Black Country retains a special place in his affections.

"I took the photos to capture wildlife and other scenes that contrast with such an industrial landscape." he adds. "To show how unique the Black Country canals are, and also to show that beauty is present in the unlikeliest of places."
